Frequently Asked Questions
What is the correct colour for a welding curtain?
Red, orange, green, or bronze tints are acceptable so long as luminous transmittance meets BS EN ISO 25980 limits; choose a tint that maintains visibility while shielding the arc.
Are transparent welding curtains safe for adjacent workers?
Provided they are certified to BS EN ISO 25980, they block harmful radiation while allowing supervision and daylight.
Can welding curtains be used outdoors?
They can, but sunlight accelerates PVC ageing; inspect regularly and replace curtains that become brittle, hazy, or cracked.
How should welding curtains be cleaned and maintained?
Wash with warm water and mild detergent; avoid solvents and check weekly for burns, tears, or hardened areas.
Do all welding processes require curtain shielding?
Arc processes (MMA, MIG or MAG, TIG, plasma) do; oxy-fuel processes emit little UV and normally do not require arc curtains.
What temperature rating do I need for a welding blanket?
For light grinding sparks, choose approximately 260 degrees Celsius, for MIG or TIG spatter, approximately 550 degrees Celsius, and for heavy stick or gouging work, greater than or equal to 1,000 degrees Celsius.
Are welding blankets safe to use vertically?
Only if the manufacturer states vertical use; molten metal can stick or burn through blankets not designed for hanging.
What is a welding curtain?
A welding curtain is a protective barrier made from fire-resistant materials, designed to shield workers and bystanders from harmful UV radiation, sparks, and heat generated during welding processes. It enhances safety in workshops and construction sites.
