What type of gloves should be used for MIG and TIG welding?
MIG: heavier cow or goatskin gloves certified to BS EN 12477 Type A; TIG: thinner deerskin or goatskin gloves certified to Type B for feel.
What heat protection level should welding gloves offer?
Look for at least Contact Heat Level 2 under BS EN 407 (250 degrees Celsius for 15 s) plus the molten metal and radiant heat performance required by BS EN 12477.
Do TIG gloves offer the same protection as MIG gloves?
TIG gloves favour dexterity, so they provide less spatter and heat resistance than MIG or stick welding gloves and should not be used for high-amp processes.
Can I use general work gloves for welding?
General gloves are not tested to BS EN 12477 or BS EN 407 and will quickly burn, shrink, or let molten metal through.
Are Kevlar-stitched welding gloves better for durability?
Kevlar thread maintains integrity up to approximately 425 degrees Celsius, so seams last longer under heat than cotton or nylon.
Do welding sleeves need to be flame-resistant?
Absolutely, they should be leather or FR fabric certified to BS EN ISO 11611 or BS EN ISO 11612.
How long do welding gloves last?
The lifespan of welding gloves varies depending on usage and care. Generally, they can last from a few months to over a year. Regular inspection for wear and tear, along with proper cleaning and storage, can help extend their durability.
